For the first time, since beginning the process of learning about opening a gym through being open nearly 2 months, I cried this week.
They were tears of joy, and they were shared with a client.
This client came on right when we opened; in their introduction appointment we mapped out what they were looking for and what support they felt they needed to get there, and since then we have been meeting weekly for personal training and nutrition coaching. This person has been dedicated—not perfect the whole way, because none of us are or can be—for the entire 8 weeks we’ve been working together, and since their first InBody scan.
At first, there was some discouragement after seeing only a 2ish pound loss on the scale… and then we got into the numbers and actual breakdown of weight. In 8 weeks, this client did a fantastic job at “recomposition”, and managed to gain over 2 pounds of muscle, and lose about 5 pounds of fat.
And so, they cried (tears of joy), and told me, “This is what you do it for!” after I apologized for crying, too. It is true… the moments like that—the ones that you can see a spark of hope and motivation in the person’s eyes you’re wanting to help succeed—make all the planning and reinforcement and hard work, totally worth it.
It also made me so thankful and reminded me how we are blessed to be able to use the InBody as a bi-monthly measurement tool: if we had just looked at the number on the scale together, our conversation would’ve ended on a different (probably disheartening) note. “I didn’t do enough,” or “Nothing works for me,” was not a thought that day, and now I can say we are likely to see that momentum continue build in the next 8 weeks, rather than a loss of faith in the process.
I can’t wait to continue checking in with clients this month, and spreading the knowledge that “YES, you CAN!”
Be well, and don’t forget to be kind to yourself this week.
